How Do I Become an Insurance Agent in Connecticut?

In order to get a license in Connecticut, you’ll need to complete the following steps:

  1. Determine the line of authority or type of license you need
  2. Complete a pre-license educational course
  3. Pass the required examination(s)
  4. Apply for a license
  5. Application review

What type of insurance license do you need?

When applying for an insurance license, you need to choose the appropriate line of authority for the particular licensure. There are two lines of authority: Property and Casualty insurance, and Life, Accident, and Health or Sickness insurance.1 You’ll want to select the Life and Health insurance line of authority. Once you are licensed by the state, you can sell life insurance, health insurance, and Accident or Sickness insurance coverage.1

The Connecticut Insurance Candidate Handbook

The Connecticut Insurance Candidate Handbook can be downloaded on the State of Connecticut website. Be sure and review the steps needed to prepare and take the insurance examination.

Take the Connecticut insurance pre-licensing course

If you want to sell insurance in multiple lines of authority (Life/ Accident, and Health or Sickness) the state of Connecticut requires 40 hours of pre-licensing training.2

Pre-licensing courses must be approved. The list of pre-licensing education providers and courses is found online at Pearson VUE.com and in the Connecticut Insurance Candidate handbook along with practice tests.

Taking the insurance exam

Pearson VUE is a national testing vendor that administers the licensing exam for the state. Register online at Pearson VUE for your examination and pay the examination fee. Fees will not be accepted at the testing center.

For convenience, an insurance exam can be taken online with an online proctor, but only two attempts are allowed. Thereafter, all exams must be taken in person at a test center. What is required for the exam:2

"For life and health insurance you must take 40 hours of classroom instruction."
  • Candidate must present two forms of identification. The primary identification must be government-issued and photo-bearing with a signature, and the secondary identification must contain a valid signature. The name on the identification must exactly match the name on the registration.
  • Each candidate will leave the test center with an official score report in hand.

Apply for the license

Once you have passed the examination, you will apply for the license at www.nipr.com. There is an application fee of $140 (as of 2024). Additional lines of authority have additional fees.

Application review

Once you have applied for your license, the state will review your application. If everything is approved, the license is then issued. A background check is part of your application and will also be checked. If there are any items from the background check needing further examination, it may slow the process down. The state will reach out and provide you with additional information they may need.
