Role Overview:

Could you be our next Director, Underwriting? Globe Life is looking for an experienced Director, Underwriting to join the team!

 

In this role, you will be responsible for the oversight of a team of Underwriting managers to support business development from different underwriting organizations. Familiarity with detailed medical knowledge related to life underwriting is necessary, as this role will have responsibilities to developing and maintaining guidelines for execution by underwriting staff. Communication will be a key aspect for this role to help facilitate analysis of underwriting and the impacts it may have to other departments including but not limited to, Sales, Customer Service, Compliance, Actuary, and Claims.

 

This is an onsite position working at our McKinney, TX corporate office.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Direct the Underwriting Staff in multiple locations.
  • Plan, staff, manage Underwriting and Support Department activities including all human resource management functions; interviewing, selecting, and training staff; monitoring and appraising performance of team members to hold them accountable for end results; administers disciplinary action as needed; administers compensation to staff; and promotes team cohesiveness to foster a productive, fair, and equitable work environment.
  • Implement continual improvements within Underwriting.
  • Consults, reviews, approves, oversees, underwrites, and/or assumes responsibility for cases with significant financial risk and Company visibility. Provides for technical assistance and training, as necessary. Interacts frequently with key external customers and internal stakeholders. Manages escalated issues. Reviews, analyzes, and takes appropriate action to resolve customer issues, attorney inquires, executive correspondence, insurance department, consumer, or producer complaints and inquiries.
  • Assures that objectives, standards, policies, and business plans for the team are implemented, reported, and monitored.
  • Presentation and implementation of plans to senior management to increase issue rates without affecting profitability.
  • Present solutions for new underwriting risk trends.
  • Assist in the evaluation of new underwriting tools.
  • Manages policy deployment, quality, cost reduction, work efficiency, customer satisfaction and employee relations.
  • Provides leadership for employee relations through effective communications, coaching, training, and development.
  • Provides leadership for problem resolution to facilitate faster improvements and improved working relationships.
  • Ensures compliance with company standards for cost control, waste reduction and quality.
  • Conducts research and analytical studies on a variety of programs and issues.
  • Develop procedures and formulate recommendations.
  • Conducts cost benefits analyses and prepares financial and statistical reports.
  • Establishes, implements, and monitors training requirements and effectiveness.
  • Assist in budget preparation and administration.

 

What You Can Bring:

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred. High school Diploma required.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in Life underwriting.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in Underwriting management or leadership.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in Data analysis and reporting.
  • Completion of LOMA 280/281 and 290/291; actively working toward AALU and FLMI.
  • Professional Designations: AALU/FALU or FLMI preferred.
  • Excellent Microsoft Office Skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Mathematics/Analytical skills essential.
  • Medical Terminology and Medical underwriting experience.
  • Excellent logic-based decision-making skills.
  • Process improvement; policy deployment, problem resolution and employee relations.
  • Budgeting and planning; effectively manage human and fiscal resources.
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with employees at various levels of the company.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team.

Savings and Investment Plan (401K) - Eligible employees may begin participating in the plan on the first day of employment.

Pension Plan - Eligible employees who complete one year of service with the Company become participants in the Pension.* (Not available to Cleveland Employees)

Medical - Benefits are available to all eligible employees and qualified dependents the first of the month following 30 days of continuous service.

Dental** and Vision - Eligible employees and qualified dependents are able to enroll the first of the month following 30 days of continuous service.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) - Our FSA has two components, Health Care and Dependent Care Accounts. These accounts allow employees to set aside a portion of their earnings on a pre-tax basis to cover out-of-pocket medical and dependent care expenses. Participation is elected on a calendar year basis and is available to all eligible employees the first of the month following the completion of 30 days of continuous service.

Health Savings Accounts (HSA) - A pre-tax Health Spending Account (HSA) is offered to those who enroll in the High Deductible Plan. It allows you to pay for health care expenses. Participation is elected on a calendar year basis and is available to all eligible employees the first of the month following the completion of 30 days of continuous service. Company contributes to HSA.

Short-Term Disability - Eligible employees may be entitled to salary continuance during periods of temporary disability. Benefits are based on employee status and years of service.*

Group Life and Long-Term Disability** - Eligible employees may elect life insurance and long-term disability coverage the first of the month following 30 days of continuous service.

Vacation and Paid Holidays - Employees are eligible for vacation upon the completion of six months of employment. In addition, the Company offers eight paid holidays.

Education Assistance - The Company supports employees who wish to continue their education to secure increased responsibility and growth within their professional careers. We offer a reimbursement program for expenses incurred through approved institutions of learning. In addition, Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI) and International Claim Association (ICA) program courses are offered after the completion of six months of services at no cost to the employee.

Fitness Reimbursement - Eligible employees are able to receive up to 100% reimbursement for monthly dues (employee only).

Supplemental Plans** - Cancer, Heart/Stroke, Accident.
