Senior Managing Actuary - Health Pricing (Hybrid)

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

As a member of the Globe Life Health Pricing team the position will develop and price new as well as existing health products utilizing actuarial techniques and be responsible for setting valuation assumptions. In addition, the position will be responsible for various regulatory filings. The successful candidate will also be managing a team of Actuarial Assistants and mentoring them as they become credentialed actuaries. The position will work cooperatively with Executive Leadership, Marketing, Valuation and Accounting to support the sustainable growth of sales and profits while managing risk and ensuring solvency.  The products that the successful candidate will work on is broad including individual and group Medicare supplement, cancer, critical illness, accident, disability income, and a range of assorted limited benefit health products.  This position is a hybrid role with an onsite schedule (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) located in our corporate office in McKinney, Texas, (Monday, Friday) work from home.

 

  • Manage a team of 4 to 5 Actuaries who exercise latitude and independence in assignments.
  • Responsible for developing the strategy for delivering annual assumptions based on experience studies, including lapse, morbidity, and trend analysis including resolving difficult to moderate problems independently.
  • Clearly articulate work efforts and outcomes to senior management.
  • Development of pricing models.
  • Prepare and file various regulatory reports.
  • Pricing of new and existing health products.
  • Collaboration with rate filing actuary to execute product and rate filings.
  • Development of new metrics to identify trends, tracking and monitoring of pricing performance on a wide range of supplemental health products for Globe Companies.
  • Work cooperatively to establish partnership and buy-in with key leaders in the Actuarial department, decision-makers in the Acquisition and Administration portfolios, and outside parties such as TPA’s.
  • Responsible for making moderate to significant improvements of pricing, rating, analysis and reporting to enhance performance of the Actuarial department.
  • Maintain knowledge of emerging benefits and regulatory developments.

Required Skills

  • Requires practical knowledge in leading and managing the execution of processes, projects and day-to-day tactical assignments within a team.
  • Advanced knowledge and skills within the Actuarial discipline with an understanding of the impact of work on other areas of the Company.
  • Apply advanced strategic knowledge of group insurance and supplemental/voluntary insurance industry.
  • Strong attention to detail; well-organized and efficient; proficient at documentation.
  • Technical knowledge of product design, form development, and rating and pricing using both traditional and advanced ratemaking techniques.
  • Strong computer skills including advanced knowledge of Excel, Data Visualization, SQL and programing languages.
  • Experience with PolySystems, a plus.
  • Ability to thrive and lead in team-based environment.
  • Well-organized, with the ability to handle several projects simultaneously with conflicting priorities and clear deadlines.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Superior analytical skills to understand both the larger picture and the critical nature of details.

Required Knowledge & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree required in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, or other similar field.
  • Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) required, FSA preferred.
  • Member of the American Academy of Actuaries required.
  • 10+ years actuarial experience.
  • Management experience preferred.
  • Working experience with managing a health pricing role preferred.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) - Our FSA has two components, Health Care and Dependent Care Accounts. These accounts allow employees to set aside a portion of their earnings on a pre-tax basis to cover out-of-pocket medical and dependent care expenses. Participation is elected on a calendar year basis and is available to all eligible employees the first of the month following the completion of 30 days of continuous service.

Health Savings Accounts (HSA) - A pre-tax Health Spending Account (HSA) is offered to those who enroll in the High Deductible Plan. It allows you to pay for health care expenses. Participation is elected on a calendar year basis and is available to all eligible employees the first of the month following the completion of 30 days of continuous service. Company contributes to HSA.

Short-Term Disability - Eligible employees may be entitled to salary continuance during periods of temporary disability. Benefits are based on employee status and years of service.*

Group Life and Long-Term Disability** - Eligible employees may elect life insurance and long-term disability coverage the first of the month following 30 days of continuous service.

Vacation and Paid Holidays - Employees are eligible for vacation upon the completion of six months of employment. In addition, the Company offers eight paid holidays.

Education Assistance - The Company supports employees who wish to continue their education to secure increased responsibility and growth within their professional careers. We offer a reimbursement program for expenses incurred through approved institutions of learning. In addition, Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI) and International Claim Association (ICA) program courses are offered after the completion of six months of services at no cost to the employee.

Fitness Reimbursement - Eligible employees are able to receive up to 100% reimbursement for monthly dues (employee only).

Supplemental Plans** - Cancer, Heart/Stroke, Accident.
