Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Assistant General Counsel will be responsible for tasks including but not limited to: insurance claim review, advising various business units (e.g., Underwriting, Customer Service, Agent Licensing, etc.) on insurance matters; prospective agent review, and general corporate legal work.”

 

 

Required Skills

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • This role will provide legal support and advice to various departments of the Company’s subsidiaries, including the departments of Underwriting/New Business, Customer Service, and Agency.
  • Attorney will counsel the Claims Department on matters involving policy rescissions, claims denials, powers of attorney, minor beneficiaries, beneficiary disputes, lapsed coverage disputes, and other matters escalated to the Legal Department from the Claims Department involving life and supplemental health insurance policies.
  • This role may answer time-sensitive correspondence from customers, Departments of Insurance, the Better Business Bureau, and attorneys.
  • This role may liaise with in-house attorneys who oversee the Company’s litigation.
  • Attorney will serve as a critical business partner to enable growth across the Company’s subsidiaries.
  • Attorney will demonstrate or develop subject matter expertise in the legal and regulatory framework applicable to life and supplemental health insurers across all jurisdictions in which the Company’s subsidiaries do business.  This role may collaborate with the Compliance Department for Market Conduct Exams and Department of Insurance inquiries.
  • Attorney will develop relationships with key personnel and department heads across the Company’s subsidiaries.
  • Attorney will perform other tasks and projects in the Legal Department as assigned.
  • From time to time, this role may be asked to assist other attorneys with, or be responsible for, other matters, including contract review, marketing or advertising review, legal research, and/or other special projects.

  • Suitable candidates will have a law degree with 3 to 5 years of relevant experience in a law firm or corporate legal experience, strong academic record, and an active license to practice law in at least one state.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines efficiently.
  • Must be a self-starter who can see a project through to completion.
  • Candidates should have strong adaptable, interpersonal skills as well as the capacity to work independently.  
  • Must be detail-oriented with the capability to analyze information and draw logical conclusions.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft products (i.e., Word, Excel, and Outlook) required.
  • Must be willing to travel as needed.
  • May be asked to provide a copy of law school transcript and / or writing sample.

Required Knowledge & Experience

Education and Experience

 

  • Juris Doctor is required. Must be licensed to practice law in Texas, Oklahoma, or state of residence if remote.
  • Prior customer service experience is desired but not required.

 

  • Prior insurance industry experience is not required, but would be a plus.
  • Prior in-house legal department experience is not required, but would be a plus.

Participation is elected on a calendar year basis and is available to all eligible employees the first of the month following the completion of 30 days of continuous service.

Health Savings Accounts (HSA) - A pre-tax Health Spending Account (HSA) is offered to those who enroll in the High Deductible Plan. It allows you to pay for many of the health care expenses not covered by your medical plan including deductibles and co-pays. Participation is elected on a calendar year basis and is available to all eligible employees the first of the month following the completion of 30 days of continuous service. Company contribution to HSA ($4500 family, $2500 single plans)

Short-Term Disability - Eligible employees may be entitled to salary continuance during periods of temporary disability. Benefits are based on employee status and years of service.*

Group Life and Long-Term Disability** - Eligible employees may elect life insurance and long-term disability coverage the first of the month following 30 days of continuous service.

Vacation and Paid Holidays - Employees are eligible for vacation upon the completion of six months of employment. In addition, the Company offers eight paid holidays.

Education Assistance - The Company supports employees who wish to continue their education to secure increased responsibility and growth within their professional careers. We offer a reimbursement program for expenses incurred through approved institutions of learning. In addition, Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI) and International Claim Association (ICA) program courses are offered after the completion of six months of services at no cost to the employee.

Fitness Reimbursement - Eligible employees are able to receive up to 100% reimbursement for monthly dues (employee only).

Supplemental Plans** - Cancer, Heart/Stroke, Accident.
