The Actuarial Department is responsible for supporting and enhancing sustainable growth of both sales and profits while managing the risks and safeguarding the solvency of Globe Life.  Actuaries are involved in life and health insurance product design, development, pricing and implementation, and are instrumental in the ongoing financial management of the enterprise.

The Data Science Director is at the forefront of innovation in the field of data science. The role will build and lead a team of data scientists and drive the development of cutting-edge data-centric solutions that optimize business performance. The high-level leadership role will collaborate with executive stakeholders across the organization and play a critical role in shaping the strategic direction of the business through data insights. This position has visibility and connectivity throughout our entire organization.


  • Designs, develops, and leads implementations of data pipelines, predictive models, and monitoring tools
  • Applies complex mathematical, statistical, and quantitative techniques to draw conclusions, make recommendations, and drive change
  • Directs and guides clustering and / or segmentation analysis

Data / Analysis:

  • Leads the team in identifying and utilizing new data sources, including exploration, cleaning, and wrangling
  • Maintains and disseminates in-depth knowledge of data analysis tools, data visualization, developing analysis queries and procedures in SQL, BI tools, or other analysis software


  • Provides strategic insights by understanding the business direction and collaborating with the Data Science COE members to build roadmaps and prioritize requests, projects, and support efforts to influence business and drive improvements
  • Manages the team's resources and workflow to ensure projects are completed and delivered on time and within budget
  • Outlines, performs, supervises, and coordinates complex analytical tasks which include the evaluation of the business problem, analytical methodology, prototypes, validation, documentation and presentation of findings and recommendations
  • Ensures adherence to risk and compliance policies, standards, and procedures for all business activities
  • Works with version control software such as Git/SVN
  • Safeguard models created to guarantee the models and insights are accurate and reliable

Collaboration / Communication:

  • Collaborates closely with business stakeholders and subject matter experts to understand their data needs and identify opportunities where data science can drive significant value
  • Maintains consistent communication of project progress, updates, and results to stakeholders and leadership
  • Coordinate with many senior IT resources to gather data and seamlessly implement data science models

Learning / Coaching:

  • Leads, guides, and develops a highly analytical team that provides data science support for business areas across the enterprise
  • Sets and upholds high standards of excellence for the team by demonstrating professional expertise, strong work ethic, integrity, and professional behavior
  • Monitors, understands, and adopts emerging technology that can affect the application of scientific methodologies and/or quantitative analytical approaches to problem resolutions
  • Identifies and recommends innovation and training opportunities to further advance the teams expertise in the practice of data science


Required Skills


  • Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders using data, dashboards, and visualizations


  • Expert skills in mathematical and statistical techniques to foster fact-based decision-making at all levels of leadership
  • Efficient feature engineering and selection (i.e., data manipulation, variable derivation, transformation, data classification)
  • Comprehensive understanding of data governance and data management best practices

Required Knowledge & Experience


  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field such as Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, Actuarial Science, or Data Science


  • Experience working in the insurance industry, or a related field, is strongly preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of data privacy and security regulations

Languages / Tools / Environments:

  • Proficiency in all or many of the following categories:
    • Programming / scripting languages (e.g., Python, R, SAS)
    • SQL and relational databases (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle, Aurora)
    • Data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, QlikView)
    • Machine learning services (e.g., SageMaker, DataRobot)


  • Over 7 years of experience in data science and machine learning, including a strong command of popular data science tools and programming languages
  • Extensive hands-on experience analyzing large, complex data sets and developing supervised and unsupervised machine learning algorithms (e.g., regression, decision trees/random forest, gradient boosting, feature selection/reduction, clustering, parameter tuning)


  • A minimum of 5 years of experience leading and managing teams of data scientists or analysts
  • Proven track record in project management experience, including leading projects through the data science life cycle


  • Onsite or Hybrid (WFH/Remote - Monday and Friday) & (In Office - Tuesday thru Thursday)

Participation is elected on a calendar year basis and is available to all eligible employees the first of the month following the completion of 30 days of continuous service. Company contributes to HSA.

Short-Term Disability - Eligible employees may be entitled to salary continuance during periods of temporary disability. Benefits are based on employee status and years of service.*

Group Life and Long-Term Disability** - Eligible employees may elect life insurance and long-term disability coverage the first of the month following 30 days of continuous service.

Vacation and Paid Holidays - Employees are eligible for vacation upon the completion of six months of employment. In addition, the Company offers eight paid holidays.

Education Assistance - The Company supports employees who wish to continue their education to secure increased responsibility and growth within their professional careers. We offer a reimbursement program for expenses incurred through approved institutions of learning. In addition, Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI) and International Claim Association (ICA) program courses are offered after the completion of six months of services at no cost to the employee.

Fitness Reimbursement - Eligible employees are able to receive up to 100% reimbursement for monthly dues (employee only).
