Sr. Manager, Data Science (Hybrid)

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY:

The Actuarial Department is responsible for supporting and enhancing sustainable growth of both sales and profits while managing the risks and safeguarding the solvency of Globe Life.  Actuaries are involved in life and health insurance product design, development, pricing and implementation, and are instrumental in the ongoing financial management of the enterprise.

The Data Science Manager is at the forefront of innovation in the field of data science. The role will lead a team of data scientists and drive the development of cutting-edge data-centric solutions that optimize business performance. The leadership role will collaborate with stakeholders across the organization and play a critical role in shaping the strategic direction of the business through data insights. This position has a high level of visibility and connectivity throughout our entire organization.

PRIMARY DUTIES & REPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Models:
    • Designs, develops, and leads implementations of data pipelines, predictive models, and monitoring tools
    • Applies mathematical, statistical, and quantitative techniques to draw conclusions, make recommendations, and drive change
    • Performs and guides clustering and / or segmentation analysis
  • Data / Analysis:
    • Directs team in identifying and utilizing new data sources (exploration, cleaning, and wrangling)
    • Maintains and shares knowledge of data analysis tools, data visualization, developing analysis queries and procedures in SQL, BI tools, or other analysis software
  • Projects:
    • Understands the business direction and helps the Data Science COE build roadmaps and prioritize requests, projects, and support efforts to influence business and drive improvements
    • Manages the team's resources and workflow to ensure projects are completed and delivered on time and within budget
    • Outlines, performs, supervises, and coordinates analytical tasks which include the evaluation of the business problem, analytical methodology, prototypes, validation, documentation and presentation of findings and recommendations
    • Adheres to risk and compliance policies, standards, and procedures for business activities
    • Works with version control software such as Git/SVN.
  • Collaboration / Communication:
    • Collaborates closely with business stakeholders and subject matter experts to understand their data needs and identify areas where data science can drive value
    • Communicates project progress, updates, and results to stakeholders and leadership on a regular basis
  • Learning / Coaching:
    • Leads, guides, and develops a highly analytical team that provides data science support for business areas across the enterprise
    • Sets standards of excellence for the team by demonstrating professional expertise, strong work ethic, integrity, and professional behavior
    • Monitors, understands, and adopts emerging technology that can affect the application of scientific methodologies and/or quantitative analytical approaches to problem resolutions.
    • Recommends training opportunities to further advance individuals in the practice of data science

 

Required Skills

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Communication:
    • Effective communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders with data, dashboards, and visualizations
  • Modeling:
    • Expert skills in mathematical and statistical techniques to foster fact-based decision-making at all levels of leadership
    • Efficient feature engineering and selection (i.e., data manipulation, variable derivation, transformation, data classification)
    • Understanding of data governance and data management best practices
  • Leading:
    • A passion to develop people, build relationships, and a growth mindset.

Required Knowledge & Experience

EDUCATION & WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field such as Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, Actuarial Science, and/or Data Science
  • Industry:
    • Experience working in the insurance industry, or a related field, is preferred
    • Familiarity with data privacy and security regulations
  • Languages / Tools / Environments:
    • Experience with all or many of the following categories:
      • Programming / scripting languages (e.g., Python, R, SAS)
      • SQL and relational databases (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle, Aurora)
      • Data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, QlikView)
      • Machine learning services (e.g., SageMaker, DataRobot)
    • Modeling:
      • 6+ years of experience in data science and machine learning, including experience with popular data science tools and programming languages
      • Hands on experience analyzing large, complex data sets and developing supervised and unsupervised machine learning algorithms (e.g., regression, decision trees/random forest, gradient boosting, feature selection/reduction, clustering, parameter tuning)
    • Leading:
      • 3+ years of experience leading and managing teams of data scientists or analysts
      • Project management experience, including leading projects through the data science life cycle

Health Savings Accounts (HSA) - A pre-tax Health Spending Account (HSA) is offered to those who enroll in the High Deductible Plan. It allows you to pay for health care expenses. Participation is elected on a calendar year basis and is available to all eligible employees the first of the month following the completion of 30 days of continuous service. Company contributes to HSA.

Short-Term Disability - Eligible employees may be entitled to salary continuance during periods of temporary disability. Benefits are based on employee status and years of service.*

Group Life and Long-Term Disability** - Eligible employees may elect life insurance and long-term disability coverage the first of the month following 30 days of continuous service.

Vacation and Paid Holidays - Employees are eligible for vacation upon the completion of six months of employment. In addition, the Company offers eight paid holidays.

Education Assistance - The Company supports employees who wish to continue their education to secure increased responsibility and growth within their professional careers. We offer a reimbursement program for expenses incurred through approved institutions of learning. In addition, Fellow, Life Management Institute (FLMI) and International Claim Association (ICA) program courses are offered after the completion of six months of services at no cost to the employee.

Fitness Reimbursement - Eligible employees are able to receive up to 100% reimbursement for monthly dues (employee only).
